What would you do if you were given exactly an hour with the player of your choice, to either practice with or just talk?

I would probably sit down with Schlager and pick his brains about serving and receiving.

IMHO I cant see any point in getting tips or pointers that are probaby well known or are way above my level. Personally the chance to get an hour on the table hitting balls and playing a few games would be much more satisfying. An hour with Waldner or Ma Lin would dor for me!
BS. |

Well I've thought about this. I would like to play games, just for one hour, ask them to be serious, and just see how big the gap really is. Pretty big I suspect.

For me there would be only one choice:
Chuang Tse Tung, (Zhuang de dong today) a table an interpreter, a ball feeder, and me. I would ask him to repeat a lecture I have watched on CD where he stands and harangues his audience on proper technique demonstrating good and bad technique while demolishing returns from an invisible receiver. I found it mesmerising. Apart from anything else his passion for the game is wonderful

I would say to them, what was the best tip anyone has ever given you, that changed your game for the better? What do you think is important in a game? I would video them for the full hour, so I can re live the experience. I would also get them to demonstrate every shot they make and explain what they are trying to achieve from that shot. I videoed a very good player, coaching once, and learnt so much just watching him coach others. My experience would not be for myself, but for when I coach others.

barry, i'm guessing they would ask you "you think i got this good because of a tip?" and i bet most of them wouldn't know how to explain what and why they do in their shots.
it depends on the player (schlager seems like a good coach) but i bet someone like waldner would be too talented to transfer any of his stuff to anyone else. it just comes too naturally to him. dragutin surbek tried coaching kids quite a few years back, his explanation of the forehand loop sounded something like "you stand like this, and then you do this... got it?" |

I would talk with him, asking for advice for someone with no talent but love for the sport.May be a good question for a wrong guy, because a super star has love for the sport and talent...
By the way pingpongpaddy, where can I get that CD?

Oh, unfortunately is sold out! I wonder how good are the others CDs about teaching table tennis. My only reference of comparison would be that series of 17 (?) chinese CDs that were available online with a male and females coaches...

If you are ph hitter
the chen long can
and chang li vcd are very good value.
I dont speak Chinese, but the value of the cds is seeing perfect technique, repeated in different situations
