I know this is more of a blog type topic, but it really is a big thing for me.

You will see my sig has changed. With the release of the July rating sheet today which includes results from my last tournament at Doncaster, I am now no.512 in England with 678 rating points. My first ever ranking!

Must really, publicly thank Sam (TTS), for the millionth time. As well as being the one to really set me going, teaching me how to play 'real' table tennis in University, its only fitting that my ranking comes directly as a result of a tournament which he came to coach me at. His coaching really helps bring out the best in my game, mainly because he knows my game so well, and my limitations.

Whilst this is a massive achievement for me and it's made me really happy, its only really just got the ball rolling into seeing how far up the ladder I'm able to climb.

The major bonus in all this is that the 678 ranking points takes me out band 6 and into band 5. I heard something about an end of season 10% deduction though. When does this come into play? On the Liverpool GP entry it says band 6 is upto 650, so I should be in band 5+4 right?

I think this is another win for DTTW too, because really I couldn't tell you how much I've learnt on here, either through straight instruction, or deep discussions over topics. Feels like its all really paid off, so thanks to everyone who's been dishing out those golden tips and quality posts.

Fantastic, I can't believe how difficult it was to get one and I'm sure it'll climb with the work and thought you put in. Next season you'll have british league as well as tournament chances to improve your rating.

Congrats.
But learn to plan months in advance as you can save loads on Travelodge and/or train fares.

Thanks guys. Yeah Tinykin, I'm starting to realise the benefits of that whole planning ahead lark!

Wiggy - the ETTA site has been up and down alot recently for me, so not sure what's up.

Anyone of you experienced players got any British League tips? Been to watch, but don't really know what to expect as a player.

What team/div are you playing in British League?

And congratulations! It's a tossup on whether I go to Liverpool or Medway this year...

BL is a lot of pressure most of it is pressure by yourself ! I need to play well, This guy "looks" really good (looks can be very deceiving!)etc

If your starting out playing BL for the first session this year enjoy it, try and play your game whatever it may be and don't try and over do what you do on the table. It's easy to try and over play. once you get your first few games out of the way and you relax BL is a great place to play. BUT be ready for some interesting venues, lighting, or lack of it! lots of tables and the odd tantrum from the" up and coming" star of this weekend who surly shouldn't be losing to you even if you are playing out of your skin!.  oh and prepare well for the weekends with lots of practice, return of serve and serve starts to be key when taking the next step up!. Good luck!

Awesome, can't wait!

All weekends are at Westfield TTC, Weavers Leisure Centre in Wellingborough, so change of venue won't be a problem, which I think is a sports centre with a purpose built table tennis hall, so hopefully will be quite a nice venue. Anyone know it?

Ah ok, I played that div the last 2 seasons, but for some reason my club's not put in teams in the lower division... Have no idea what's going on there!

It's quite strong though, and some of the players have a decent amount of points. You certainly get a variety in the style of player you come across!

Good luck, hope you do well!

Always good to know its good conditions.

Yeah, I'm kinda unsure what standard to expect. I never really expected to play BL probably for the next year at least, but I just got asked and couldn't refuse.

I'm playing as no.4 for the 1st weekend, so should get a steady start to see what its like. Looking forward to the team camaraderie just as much as actually playing. Think the majority of the team will be younger than me, I'm 22 so that makes for quite a young team.

Don't get carried away though Honey, you are NOT ranked 512 in England.
You have 678 RATING points which places you 512th in order of players currently appearing on the list, That is far far away from saying that you are the 512th best player in England, which would be a ranking. That is why there are two different lists, a RANKING list and a RATING list. Your 'ranking' does not include the many players better than you who have not played, and believe me, there are a lot.
My current 'ranking' is 94, that includes foreign players (can't play for England) who regularly play in England, so if I take them out, I would be probably 20 places higher, but on the other hand there are literally 100's of players my standard who are not active in ETTA competitions so are not included on the list. In your case, when you get down to the 500's, there are literally 1000's think of all the good players in all of the 300 leagues. What you do have is an identity, a standard that gives you something to work on, please, think of your standard as your rating. I've been doing this a long time, you can go down 100 places easily once the season starts, simply because 100 players above you appear on the next list. I can't, because there are less players my standard who will  suddenly appear on the list, but 10 places is possible easily. The fact is, after the top 30, there are so many players as the pyramid of standard expands, that the lower you go, the more players of a copmparable standard to you. So 'well done' is a bit meaningless in a way, you just turned up and played your best, and the computer placed you where you are.
The 'well done' bit comes when you make considerable jumps up the list from your initial rating, which is a clear indication that you have improved.

Welcome to the forum nicoledc109, is that advertising in your signature?

Wiggy you're right, and don't worry, I'm level headed. Could name a good dozen of people just at my club that are better than me and not on the rankings so there must be loads throughout the country.

It's a goal I set myself, and I achieved it. My next goal has to be to get into the 400's.

Oh, and I take your point and have changed my sig. from ranking to rating, makes more sense seeing as it is the 'rating' sheet I'm on.

So what you're saying is...forget about my position in the sheet, concentrate on the number of points I've got?

Yes, because for the reasons stated above, until you get very high, your 'ranking' is largely meaningless, and over importance in its meaning can easily put you under needless pressure. Its true that many counties pick there teams of rating order, and in the British league, you have to play in rating order if a player is top 100, so there is an importance when you get towards the sharp end of the pyramid.
